The aerospace/navy/airlines/railways industry adheres to stringent safety regulations and guidelines, allowing no margin of error in any aspect of the manufacturing process. Consequently, the packaging, transportation, and storage of aerospace/navy/airlines/railways & industrial parts demand equal diligence and must comply with AS9100 standards. Providers of packaging materials are required to design and implement customized solutions accordingly. Imperfect packaging can lead to damage, high costs, loss of time, and most importantly, jeopardize the safety of the craft. Many components are extremely large, sometimes weighing over five tons, while others are uniquely shaped or require extra sensitive packaging due to their delicate and fragile technological nature.
1. Corrugated Packaging:
Corrugated cardboard is a strong contender in the packaging of aerospace/navy/airlines/railways & industrial equipment. It is used alongside other materials that are tested to perform at specific levels. Specialist coatings can enhance the use and life of corrugated packaging. An anti-abrasion coating helps prevent scratches to painted and polished surfaces during transportation, while a VCI coating provides corrosion and rust protection for ferrous metals during transportation and storage. Grease and oil barriers can also be applied to corrugated cardboard for the safe transportation of oily or greasy components.
2. Anti-Static Foam:
Anti-static foam is often incorporated into customized high-performance protective cases. Made from static dissipative polyurethane and polyethylene materials, anti-static foam is used to package electronic and communication equipment. It acts as both a cushioning material and a dissipater of electrostatic charges, which can damage sensitive equipment. The preference for anti-static foam arises from its durability, resilience, flexibility, lightweight nature, and moisture resistance, in addition to its anti-static properties. It protects against high temperatures, physical impact, climate changes, and biochemical hazards during storage and transportation.
3. Anti-Static Aerospace/navy/airlines/railways & industrial Packaging:
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a critical factor in aerospace/navy/airlines/railways & industrial packaging, as it can cause high-value components and electronic devices to suffer damage, either as latent defects or complete failures. ESD shielding products come in various forms besides anti-static foam, including anti-static cardboard and molded plastic. Sensitive objects are shielded from static by layering protective materials to dissipate static. An experienced engineering and design team can assess the best materials and products to provide anti-static safety.
An antistatic bag is designed to store electronic components that are vulnerable to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD). These bags are usually crafted from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic and are easily identified by their color: silvery for metallized film, and either pink or black for polyethylene versions. The polyethylene variant can also come in the form of foam or bubble wrap, available as sheets or bags. To provide comprehensive protection against both mechanical and electrostatic damage, multiple layers of packaging are often used. For example, a device may be placed inside a metallized PET film bag, which is then enclosed in a pink polyethylene bubble-wrap bag, and finally packed inside a rigid black polyethylene box lined with pink poly foam. It's crucial that these bags are opened only at static-free workstations.
Types of Antistatic Bags:
1. Dissipative Antistatic Bags
Dissipative antistatic bags are made from standard polyethylene with a static dissipative coating or layer on the plastic. This coating prevents the buildup of static charges on the bag's surface by dissipating the charge to the ground.
2. Conductive Antistatic Bags
Conductive antistatic bags are designed with a layer of conductive metal, typically aluminum, combined with a dielectric plastic layer and a static dissipative coating. This combination creates a protective shield and a non-conductive barrier, safeguarding contents from static charges via the Faraday cage effect. These bags are ideal for sensitive electronic components and are commonly used in environments where sparks pose a hazard, such as oxygen-rich settings in aircraft and hospitals. However, metallized bags are more delicate than non-metal alternatives, as any puncture can compromise the shield, and they have a limited shelf life due to the gradual degradation of the metal layer. Typically gray or silver with partial transparency, they are a go-to for critical protection needs.
3. Antistatic Bubble Bags
Antistatic bubble bags are used for packaging fragile materials, ESD equipment, and ESD consumables, providing cushioning and protection during transit. The bubbles, which offer shock and vibration isolation, come in various sizes depending on the object being packed and the level of protection required. Multiple layers of bubble wrap may be necessary for added protection, while a single layer can serve as a surface protective layer.
Bubble wrap is commonly made from polyethylene (LDPE) film, with a shaped side bonded to a flat side to create air bubbles. Some bubble wraps have a lower permeation barrier film, which extends the life of the bubbles and provides resistance to air loss in vacuums. The bubbles can range from 6 millimeters (0.24 inches) to 26 millimeters (1.0 inch) or more in diameter, with the most common size being 1 centimeter. Pink antistatic bubble bags are available in various sizes and specifications to meet different packaging needs.
Wooden Crates or Boxes:
Aerospace/navy/airlines/railways & industrial components are often large and can weigh over five tons, requiring robust protection from movement and rust. Wooden boxes and crates, made from plywood and pinewood, provide this essential protection. These crates are not only strong and secure but are also engineered to endure mechanical stress during transportation. They can be completely sealed to safeguard contents from environmental factors and unauthorized access. Additionally, wooden crates offer versatility; they can be sealed, hinged, collapsible, and have removable sides. They are also cost-effective, reusable, repairable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly, promoting a greener supply chain.
Wooden Pallets:
Various types of wooden pallets are used in packaging to protect lightweight and heavy-duty products due to their strength, durability, and load-bearing capacity. Wood is cost-efficient compared to other pallet materials and is easily customizable to fit specific supply chain requirements. For export packaging, wooden pallets can be heat-treated according to ISPM 15 regulations.
Types of Wooden Pallets:
- Pinewood Pallets (Euro/US Pallets): These eco-friendly pallets have a 15% moisture content and are kiln-dried. Euro pallets meet European market standards, available in Standard and Customized variations. Standard Euro Pallets comply with European Union packaging specifications, commonly used in logistics, sea, and air cargo transportation, with typical dimensions of 1200x800x144mm and 1200x1000x166mm. US Standard Pallets meet USA and Canadian market needs, with standard dimensions of 1219x1016x160mm.
- Plywood Pallets: Known for their low moisture absorption and lightweight, these pallets are ideal for large container packaging and export purposes. With smooth surfaces, they are not considered a phytosanitary risk, avoiding FAO, IPPC, and ISPM 15 clearances. HelpNFix can customize plywood pallets up to 3 meters in length, designed as crated or full deck.
